There's nothing like coming home after a long day to a space that wraps you in a warm embrace — a place where you can step away from the outside world to rest and rejuvenate. Whether it's a light-filled haven with windows overlooking tree branches or a cozy boudoir enveloping you like a private cocoon, there's a dream master bedroom perfect for your ideal respite. We've scoured the South to find the dreamiest, most soothing Southern bedrooms. Take note of your favorite design elements, so you can work them into your space to create the bedroom of your dreams.

10 Soothing Southern Bedrooms
Elegant & Edgy
"This project was a bit of a balancing act because the husband has very traditional tastes and the wife has a bit more artistic flair. It was challenging, but fun, trying to marry their tastes in the textiles and materials we selected for the room," says Laura Vogtle, principal interior designer of Birmingham, Alabama-based L. Vogtle Design Group. The entire home has traditional bones, but Laura and her client wanted to bring a modern edge to the master, while still retaining the element of high comfort. Laura adds, "I love the way the color palette turned out — it feels so luxurious!"

Modern French Rococo
"This bedroom is a mix of bohemian, hyper-feminine and modern," says Mary Patton, founder and lead interior designer of Houston, Texas-based Mary Patton Design. "I was inspired by a French Rococo direction, and I decided to make it very dressy, but still using a casual fabric, and added a dramatic canopy. I then added modern seating and lighting to balance out the 'overdone-ness' of the bed." A mid-century modern rattan loveseat was reupholstered in the same fabric as the canopy's interior, marrying the drama of the bed with the lounge area for a space that is as visually stunning as it is cozy.
"My favorite thing about this room is the rug," says Mary Patton, founder & lead interior designer of Mary Patton Design. "I found it at an antique show — at a vendor in a field! It is a vintage Turkish Oushak with hints of blush in it, which is very unusual!" Image: Molly Culver

Luxe Rusticity
For this bedroom in the Alamo Heights Treehouse development in San Antonio, Texas, Mark Ashby – founder of Mark Ashby Design – aimed to capture the natural feel of the home's surroundings through a decidedly contemporary lens. "This bedroom is nestled in the trees, so we wanted to emphasize natural materials to reference the outside-in nature of the home," says Mark. "We used plaster walls, reclaimed wood for the custom-made bed, bronze sconces and metallic art for a polished modernity with a rustic soul. My favorite piece in the room is the artwork that gives an element of shine and reflection."

French Transitional
Classic French interiors capture an elegant old-world feel, thoughtfully peppered with modern lines, colors and textures. "We engaged local artisans to create this massive custom headboard and utilized fine, elegant fabrics to recover some of the client's existing pieces while integrating this with some existing classic pieces," says Leslie Murphy, owner and creative director of Murphy Maude Interiors in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee. "I love the soft, soothing colors the owner chose, the updated chandelier from Visual Comfort and the beautiful seating area, which incorporates a more contemporary look into the overarching classic design elements."

Art-Forward Abode
Jade Joyner, co-founder and principal designer of Athens, Georgia-based Metal + Petal, had a client who was inspired by an online photo of a dramatic, art-forward bedroom, so she ran with it. "Since the room is so large and the ceilings are so tall, I had my local upholsterer make a custom oversized headboard that carried the space," says Jade. "I love the mix of the green velvet, gray bedding and Kelly Wearstler wallpaper. (She is my all-time favorite designer!) Once we installed the modern wallpaper, the space instantly felt updated." This look is carried into the sitting room with tall, custom taffeta tone-on-tone drapes, another pop of rich green velvet and bold local art.

Modern Farmhouse
Ashley Moore, founder and principal designer of Moore House Interiors in Tomball, Texas, had to get creative when it came time to design her own bedroom. "It was the last space I focused on after we moved in, and our budget was super-low," says Ashley. "First, we added the shiplap focal wall and rustic beams to bring in interest and add character to the space. When it came to the furniture, we had budgeted for the new wrought-iron bed, but I had to get thrifty with everything else." The bedside tables, both flea market finds with a fresh coat of black paint, cost a total of $100 each. Similarly, the church pew, antique mirrors, and rug were all thrift store or flea market steals that lend a timeworn charm to the otherwise fresh backdrop. "I especially love the pop of color the rug brings to the space without being too bold," adds Ashley. "This space was all about mixing the old and the new to create a timeless, no-fuss look."

Classical Meets Contemporary
A thoughtful layering of casual neutrals and mixed metals along with both new and old pieces brought this modern-traditional bedroom together. "I mainly focused on texture, balance and color, layering various elements of texture through different textiles and bedding, along with a cowhide rug. I balanced the room with symmetrical lamps, nightstands, pillows and window treatments," says Mary Clair Cumbaa, owner and lead designer of Cumbaa Design Co. in the Mississippi Delta. "For texture, I mixed modern black and iron pieces with antique chests as nightstands." The result is a stirring synthesis of elegance and charm.

Glamorous Getaway
"Our clients love to travel and asked for a master bedroom that would feel like a luxury hotel when they are home," says Abbe Fenimore, founder and interior designer of Studio Ten 25 in Dallas, Texas. "The space is quite large, so creating a cozy environment that would give them a comfortable place to lounge while still feeling pulled together was the goal. We chose a classic modern feel with soft neutrals, organic prints and cozy textures, and incorporated an acrylic four-poster bed to create the 'wow' factor they wanted." Like adding jewelry to a look, the addition of edgy and luxurious textures in the quartz table lamps, leather nightstands and graphic velvet bench perfectly finished off the room.

Sweet Whimsy
Interior designer Becca Gaines of Memphis, Tennessee-based B. Gaines Interior Design was tasked with creating a bedroom for two adorable little girls. She wanted to create a peaceful environment that encouraged the freedom and creativity of their vibrant personalities. "There is a great play on structured symmetry and organic relaxed movement in this room," says Becca. "The drapery panels were inspired by theater and couture while I was walking through a beautiful old neighborhood in New Orleans. It was really fun to mock them up in the drapery workroom because none of us had created panels like this before." The result is equal parts elegant and playful, perfectly befitting the two girls.
"Two of the cutest little girls share this room. Every time I visit, they are twirling, flipping and dancing around the house," says Becca Gaines of B. Gaines Interior Design. Scandinavian Charm
"Symmetry creates balance, and balance allows the mind to rest. To me, it's very important to be able to relax and recharge in a bedroom space," says Maggie Griffin, founder and lead designer of Gainesville, Georgia-based Maggie Griffin Design. "The pair of nightstands and mirrors coupled with the bench at the foot of the bed provide not only a beautiful focal point when you enter the space, but provide that balance, too." Maggie's client had a clear vision for her dream bedroom, and it was more tactile in nature with a sumptuous, comforting look and feel. "So we layered more texture than color here with Belgian linens and subtle touches of powder blues and soft whites. It's a bit rustic, a bit Scandinavian, and very comfortable."
